Scientists are teaching shrimp to eat in microgravity, a crucial step towards establishing sustainable food sources for future moon bases. This research, conducted by Okayama University of Science, utilizes a novel clinostat to simulate microgravity, enabling the study of complex animals like crustaceans. The findings suggest that shrimp could be ideal candidates for space food chains, showcasing adaptability in their feeding behavior and genetic responses to the microgravity environment. The experiments involved juvenile kuruma shrimp and brine shrimp (Artemia), with the latter demonstrating successful preying, waste generation, and growth in microgravity conditions. However, the study also highlights the need for further research, particularly with fish, due to technical limitations. The use of sea monkeys in space experiments is expected to continue, contributing to our understanding of aquaculture in space and its potential role in sustaining astronauts on the Moon and beyond.
